Research/Clinical Interest
Title
Mucosal Homeostasis in Normal Development and in GI Inflammatory Diseases
Description
The intestinal epithelium undergoes rapid turnover, while it has to maintain barrier, and perform transport functions. The orderly process of turnover includes proliferation in the crypts, migration and differentiation toward the villus tip (small intestine) or toward the surface epithelium (colon), then removal by programmed cell death. This entire sequence is strongly influenced by innate and adaptive immune mechanisms and by inflammatory mediators. In turn, divergence from the normal process of turnover has profound effects on both immune and inflammatory processes in the intestine, and systemically. My research program aims to analyze the mechanisms of epithelial, immune and inflammatory interactions that underlie normal and disordered mucosal homeostasis, with particular interest in G protein-coupled receptor-mediated signaling.
