Biographical Sketch 
Dr. Carlton Young, M.D. joined the faculty of UAB’s Department of Surgery Division of Transplantation in 1997. Professor Young currently serves as The Director of Pancreas Transplantation, The Assistant Dean for Medical Student Diversity in addition to his roles as a mentor/instructor, clinician and researcher. Dr. Young performed the first pancreatic islet cell transplant in the state of Alabama on June 4, 2004. He was instrumental in initiating UAB’s non-traditional living donor program and paired kidney donation program. One of his many awards was being recognized as one of America’s Top Surgeons in 2009. An active researcher, sought after lecturer and extensively published, Dr. Young’s major research interests include studying racial disparities in renal transplantation, pancreatic islet cell transplantation and living donor outcomes. Dr. Young is and active instructor and mentor in the School of Medicine’s General Surgery Training program. In addition, Dr. Young has served on medical missions overseas, and serves the Birmingham community and his faith-based community.
