Biographical Sketch 
Dr. Jamie A. Cannon, is a colorectal surgeon and Assistant Professor within the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery at UAB and the VA Medical Center. She is double board certified, with certification from the American Board of Surgery in 2008 and by the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery in 2009. She is a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons, and is a member of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, and the Association of Women Surgeons. She is an active clinician, treating patients with a variety of colorectal and gastrointestinal disorders, including diverticulitis, pelvic floor disorders, anorectal disorders, inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer. Dr. Cannon is actively involved in medical student and resident education. In addition to clinical education both in the operating room and in the clinic, she lectures medical students and has a weekly mentoring group with students in core surgical clerkship. She regularly gives presentations throughout Alabama on various colorectal topics. These presentations include the Alabama meeting of the American College of Surgeons, Grand Rounds and lectures to Fellows. Her ongoing collaboration with investigators in other disciplines defines her research. She is currently working on the development of a pilot project designed to assess the feasibility of screening African Americans under the age of 50 for colorectal cancer. In addition she collaborates with colleagues investigating gastroenterology, mucosal immunology and virology. She also frequently collaborates with urogynecology in the treatment of pelvic floor disorders. Because of the overlap in defecatory and urinary dysfunction, the management of these patients requires a team approach.
