Biographical Sketch 
Kirby I Bland, M.D. is the Fay Fletcher Kerner Professor and Chair Emeritus of UAB's Department of Surgery and as well as providing leadership to the Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Bland is internationally renowned for his contributions to surgical oncology and for his distinguished career as a general surgeon, researcher and editor. Dr. Bland to maintains a clinical practice, operating and seeing patients 4 days a week. Dr. Bland's research influence is far reaching. He has been a Principle Investigator/Program Leader of the Cancer Center's National Institute of Health's SPORE (Specialized Program of Research Excellence) on 2 prior cycles and continues to be the Principal Investigator on UAB's NIH T-32 Training Grant in Surgical Oncology. His scientific focus and research remains that of targeted therapies and chemoprevention of breast cancer with the intent for advancement of innovation and translational science in clinical trials for Breast Cancer and melanoma. Dr. Bland is a sought after speaker; presenting at Medical Schools and teaching Universities around the country as well as serving the local community. He is the author or co-author of almost 600 journal publications, author or editor of 44 textbooks, including the largest selling book on breast diseases, The Breast: Comprehensive Management of Benign and Malignant Diseases. Dr. Bland is currently an active editorial board member of 12 scientific peer-reviewed journals. Since January of 2005, he has served as the editor-in-chief of The American Journal of Surgery.
