Biographical Sketch 
Dr. Buford is a Professor in the Department of Medicine, having joined UAB in 2017. He also as Co-Director of the UAB Nathan Shock Center and Director of the Center for Exercise Medicine. Dr. Buford’s research spans both animal and human models and is focused largely on the preservation of late-life physical function with growing interest in preserving cognitive function. In particular, Dr. Buford has interest in the role of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) in preserving physical and cognitive functions. He and his colleagues are actively evaluating the roles of vasodilatory compounds in the RAS axis for in preserving theses functions. These studies have also recently dovetailed with interest in the gut microbiome as a potential delivery site for these RAS modifying agents.
