The course is based at the obstetrics service of University Hospital, during which the student will: (1) demonstrate an understanding of maternal, fetal, and placental physiology and how it impacts on diagnostic testing and treatment modalities; (2) understand the implications and potential complications of multiple medical problems in the pregnant patient with particular emphasis on: Diabetes, Sickle Cell Anemia, Congenital Heart Disease, Asthma, Chronic Hypertension, Autoimmune Disease, and Thyroid dysfunction; (3) acquire knowledge of the unique complications and considerations of infectious diseases in pregnancy; (4) demonstrate knowledge and management of the following antenatal obstetric complications: preterm rupture of membranes, preterm labor, pregnancy induced hypertensive disorders, third trimester bleeding, intrauterine growth retardation, and; (5) develop an understanding of the indications and limitations of antenatal testing, ultrasound, and genetic screening and diagnostic testing; (6) demonstrate understanding of postpartum management of the above problems and potential postpartum complications. The student(s) will work closely with and be supervised by the PGY 1 and 3 OB Resident assigned to the service, the MFM fellow, and the onservice MFM faculty member. The AI may be split into two "sub-blocks" spending time with the high-risk service as well as the postpartum service. While on the postpartum service, the student will be supervised by the PGY 1 and 2, as well as the MFM fellow and onservice faculty member. During time on the postpartum service, students will have the opportunity to gain more experience on labor and delivery and gain exposure to the management of high-risk patients in labor. Students will attend selected ultrasound, prenatal diagnosis, and high risk OB clinics during the rotation. There is no night call on this rotation.
