Course Description The Division of Gastroenterology can offer students an elective assignment at the University Hospital Service. Teaching is the primary responsibility of the Gastroenterology staff members, but shared by the Gastroenterology fellows and medical residents assigned to each service. An assignment to this service offers the following training opportunity. Patients referred to the Gastroenterology Service for consultation would first be seen by the student, who should in turn present these patients to the medical resident and the attending staff. The official consultation report would be prepared by the medical resident; however, the student would have an opportunity to follow the diagnostic work-up and hospital course of each patient to whom he was assigned. The student would also be encouraged to attend all endoscopic and other diagnostic procedures performed by this service to observe the indications, capabilities and limitations of each procedure. The student would accompany the service on attending rounds of the patients seen and would participate in other scheduled conferences of the Gastroenterology Service, including the Medical-Surgical Conference and weekly GI Divisional Conference.
