Course Description The student will function as an acting intern on this service. Students will be exposed to broad spectrum of malignant diseases including those of the GI tract (esophagus, liver, pancreas, and stomach), skin (melanoma, cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, and basal cell carcinoma), and soft tissue (sarcoma). In addition, the student will care for patients with benign hepatopancreatobiliary diseases including complex pancreatitis and pancreatic cystic disease. Students will be assigned direct patient care responsibilities to be undertaken under the supervision of both faculty members and the house staff. The student will be responsible for direct presentations to the faculty on a daily basis and will be supervised in the operating room and in outpatient clinic settings by those faculty members. Students are expected to learn principles of cancer disease both pathophysiology and normal physiology and are exposed to the multidisciplinary approach for the management of these diseases. Evaluation Pass/Fail. Direct faculty and resident evaluation of student performance on service. The student will be assessed for the likelihood of success in general surgery residency.
