Prerequisites

Course Description

Students gain experience in the medical and rehabilitation management of children and adolescents who have temporary or permanent impairments (paralysis, sensory loss, cognitive dysfunction, alteration of consciousness, decreased endurance, etc.) due to traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke, brain tumor, amputation, demyelinating disease, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, or other illness/injury. There is a strong emphasis on the team approach with the physician serving as the team leader communication serving as the vital link between team members including nurses, physical and occupational therapists, speech/language pathologists, neuropsychologists, counselors, nutritionists, social workers, and most importantly the patient and patient's family. The student will be assigned on a short-term rotation basis to one or more staff physicians on an inpatient and/or outpatient service, depending upon how the course is taken. The student will be allowed to concentrate in a particular area of interest (spinal cord injury, stroke, brain injury, cerebral palsy, etc.). The student will make daily rounds with the attending physician and resident on the inpatient and consult service prior to starting outpatient clinic duties for the entire month or a portion of the month, depending upon how the course is taken.

Children's of Alabama, 5 Dearth, McWane 5601 at 7:30 AM on the first day of the rotation (unless otherwise instructed by the Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine office). Students are to contact the course contact via email or at 205-637-9790 at least one week prior to start date to obtain a rotation schedule.

Requirements

Elective AI, Other AI-Ambulatory: 1) Round with the inpatient service; attend weekly inpatient team meetings; following 1-2 patients as deemed appropriate. 2) Assist resident and attending physician with new consultations and round with the team on new consults as directed. 3) Attend clinics M-F, typically 8am-5pm following inpatient rounds; participate in daily conferences, lectures or Grand Rounds. 4) Review selected readings from PM&R texts and articles provided.

Elective: 1) Round with the inpatient service during portions of the rotation to gain a broad appreciation of the scope of Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine and attend weekly inpatient team meetings. 2) Attend clinics Monday-Friday, typically 8am-5pm following inpatient rounds and participate in or attend daily conferences, lectures, or Grand Rounds. 3) Review selected readings from PM&R texts and articles provided during the rotation

Evaluation

Pass/Fail based on:
1) Faculty evaluation of clinical performance
2) Oral presentation on a topic of choice for residents, students and a faculty member
3) Resident evaluations
