Course Description This elective rotation has been designed as a "total immersion" experience for the student who is considering Anesthesiology as a career choice. Each student will be assigned to various anesthesia residents for the duration of the rotation. The student will participate in all areas of patient care under the continuous supervision of residents, as well as attending Anesthesiologists. During the rotation, a reasonable degree of proficiency in technical skills should be acquired including airway management, mask ventilation, endotracheal intubation, and venous access. In addition, the students will be introduced to jet ventilation, fiber optic intubation, bronchoscopy, as well as other advanced techniques utilized in anesthesia. There will be opportunities for observing and performing invasive monitoring and regional anesthetic techniques. The essentials of sedative, analgesic and anesthetic pharmacology will be taught. The student will learn the fundamentals of cardiorespiratory monitoring and the principles of mechanical ventilation. The student will gain an understanding of local anesthetic pharmacology and the use of those agents in spinal, epidural and regional anesthetics. The student will additionally spend days in the following subspecialty areas: In-Patient Pain Service (IPS), Obstetric anesthesia (OB), and Cardiothoracic and cardiovascular anesthesia (CV).
Where To Report You will be contacted prior to start date regarding information on when and where to report for orientation.
Requirements See Course Description. Students are only allowed to miss 2 days during this 4 week rotation. If a student anticipates missing more than 2 days during this rotation, they must get prior approval from the course contact and medical student director. If prior approval is not obtained, the student's final grade could be impacted in a negative way up to a Fail from the rotation.
Evaluation EVALUATION: Students will be assigned to weekly preceptors consisting of residents, and occasionally faculty. Students will be judged on knowledge, attitude, ability, technical skills, and progress; these will be documented on a standardized evaluation form. Conference attendance will be recorded. The preceptor evaluations, attendance records, and results of a written examination will be utilized for letters of recommendation, ranking for the McGahey Award in Anesthesiology (cash award) presented at the Honor's Convocation, and as the basis for a pass or fail grade.
