Course Description The goal of this elective is to introduce the student to common chronic and cancer pain problems and to present them with an appreciation of treatment options. The student will participate in the multi-disciplinary group staffing sessions and will accompany anesthesiology residents or fellows while they perform their clinical duties which include therapeutic blocks. Common pain problems encountered include pain due to cancer and its treatment, diabetic neuropathy, postherpetic neuralgia, generalized myofascial pain, headaches, and low back pain. Interventions include regional anesthetic blocks, focal steroid injections, neurolysis, fluoroscopy and CT-guided procedures, behavioral management, and medical management which includes the use of opioids, anti-depressants, anti-convulsants, and anti-arrhythmics. Educational materials specific to pain management will be provided, and periodic didactic sessions and discussions are provided in the Pain Treatment Center.

Requirements See Course Description. Students are only allowed to miss 2 days during this 4 week rotation. If a student anticipates missing more than 2 days during this rotation, they must get prior approval from the course contact and medical student director. If prior approval is not obtained, the student's final grade could be impacted in a negative way up to a Fail from the rotation.
Evaluation Students will be judged on knowledge, attitude, ability, technical skills, and progress; these will be documented on a standardized evaluation form. Conference attendance will be recorded. The preceptor evaluations, attendance records, and results of a written examination will be utilized for letters of recommendation, ranking for the McGahey Award in Anesthesiology (cash award) presented at the Honors Convocation, and as the basis for a pass or fail grade.
