Prerequisites * * * WRITTEN APPROVAL REQUIRED * * * Enrollment for medical students is by permission only. Students must take the UAB Spanish language placement test and score B1 or higher. Students can email rodriguez@uab.edu to inquire about completing the placement test.

Course Description The purpose of this course is to prepare students for healthcare interactions conducted in Spanish. This course focuses on the Spanish-speaking health-related culture, presenting practical vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, medical terminology, and cultural attitudes of Spanish-speaking patients towards health issues. This course builds and develops speaking, listening, and reading skills by emphasizing intensive conversation, technical reading, and vocabulary acquisition. Conducted in Spanish.

Evaluation Student Expectations/Evaluation:
- Grading: Pass/Fail
- Grades are based on:
• Class attendance: Absence for 2 classes will result in 2 point reduction in your final grade; Absence for 3 classes will result in failure of the course.
• Class participation
• Weekly preparation assignments and proficiency activities
• Exposition activities
• Assessment: one oral exam, one final project
Notes Evaluation will be based on student completing the following. The learning objectives below will be assessed and student will earn points to pass the course based on their participation and performance.
• Communicate with patients in Spanish using professional medical etiquette
• Take a problem-focused medical history for common conditions in Spanish
• Take a complete medical history, including family and social history, in Spanish
• Explain and describe a physical examination in Spanish
• Perform basic health counseling about common issues in Spanish
• Discuss sensitive health topics in Spanish
