Course Description Course Description: This course aims to educate students on the foundation of interprofessional practice through modalities of conceptual application within team-based model building. Delving into the differential operations of traditional (uniprofessional) care versus integrated (interprofessional) care will assist in gaining a deeper understanding of the importance for Interprofessional implementation. Through comparative analysis, students will adequately disseminate the mission and vision of Interprofessional practice by evaluating interprofessional core competencies, infrastructure design, and workplace relations (related to conflict management, mutual support, and respect for diversity). Students will be able utilize the knowledge gained from this immersive academic experience and make real-world application to provide high quality, patient-centered care in the field. This course is a collaborative experience and will encompass student enrollment from multiple health professions. Learning Goals: 1. Understand the importance of nurturing relationships to lead effectively within teams. 2. Define the meaning of Interprofessional practice and understand how it promotes patient-centered care. 3. Compare and contrast differences between interprofessional and traditional uniprofessional practice. 4. Disseminate why value/ethics is an imperative competency within the Interprofessional education collaborative. 5. Outline discipline roles and responsibilities that make up the interprofessional team. 6. Evaluate communication strategies utilized in Interprofessional practice. 7. Define and examine teams and team structure and assess how to effectively overcome barriers in teams. Objectives: 1. Understand the need for Interprofessional practice and identify how it promotes patient-centered care. 2. Apply deep-critical thinking skills in collaborative discussions to address topics related to clinic operation, conflict management, and team diversity. 3. Evaluate the IPEC core competencies centered on values/ethics, roles/responsibilities, teamwork, and communication and be able to apply these standards in healthcare settings. 4. Construct an interprofessional clinic model, to reflect the IPEC core competencies represented in clinic infrastructure, operation, and leadership.
