Course Description
On the Tuscaloosa campus, the psychiatry clerkship is eight weeks in duration. The rotation involves a number of components. These are outpatient, adult and child clinics, consultation liaison at DCH, Bryce Hospital, Family Medicine Clinics at UMC and inpatient and outpatient clinics at the Veterans Administration Hospital. In addition, Neurology is a component of the eight week experience. Students are monitored regularly by the teaching faculty during the performance of their duties on daily rounds and during clinic activities. The students are advised at orientation to keep a list of patients seen which is reviewed by their supervisors on a continuous basis during the clerkship. Students have an opportunity to present cases and formulate diagnostic impressions and treatment plans on a regular basis with teaching faculty and the Clerkship Director. Students are assigned patients during their clinical experiences in all settings. They are required to do two complete write-ups including differential diagnosis and formulation during the eight week rotation. All of their patient encounters are logged on E-value patient logs which are monitored by the Psychiatry Clerkship Director. Students work under observation and supervision regularly and are given feedback as they perform their clinical duties. They receive formal feedback used on the mid-clerkship evaluation form, halfway during the rotation. They are also given individual feedback by examiners after completion of the video/oral exam.
