Course Description The Family Medicine Clerkship is a required 4-week rotation taken during the third year of medical school at the UAB Heersink SOM. This rotation is designed to foster clinical competencies within the frame work of the family physician's approach to medicine, one that emphasizes the provision of continuous, comprehensive, and coordinated care for a broad spectrum of patients in the ambulatory setting. To ensure that students gain exposure to the diversity that is inherent to Family Medicine the Family Medicine clerkship includes assignments in three distinct patient care settings: the UAB-Huntsville Family Medicine Center, the Family Medicine In-Patient Service at Huntsville Hospital and one Nursing Home Site (Windsor House). Because of the variety of patient care settings offered, students are exposed to all facets of Family Medicine. While on the clerkship students are expected to become proficient in interviewing patients, performing physical examinations, formulating differential diagnoses based on their histories and examinations, as well as improve their documentation skills in the electronic medical record. Students are also expected to improve their interpretation of ECG, and demonstrate basic suturing skills.

Requirements Students are required to attend orientation at which they will receive a schedule schedule for the first part of the rotation, including assignment to preceptors in each of the three patient care settings above, didactic sessions, and workshops; attendance and participation in all these scheduled activities is mandatory. Additional weekly schedules will be provided throughout the rotation. All students are required to keep a patient log during the clerkship and to make a 15-20-minute Ambulatory Case Presentation on a patient with a common complaint seen during their out-patient experience.
Evaluation Clinical Component – 70%. NBME Shelf Exam – 30%.
