Prerequisites SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE FIRST TWO YEARS OF MEDICAL SCHOOL AND USMLE STEP I. STUDENTS MUST ALSO SUBMIT CLERKSHIP PAPERWORK TO COURSE CONTACT AT LEAST 2 WEEKS PRIOR TO THE COURSE START DATE FOR CLEARANCE TO THE VA MEDICAL CENTER. FAILURE TO SUBMIT PAPERWORK AND OBTAIN CLEARANCE WILL RESULT IN THE STUDENT BEING RESCHEDULED.

Course Description The Internal Medicine clerkship (Birmingham) is comprised of 2 four-week inpatient rotations performed primarily at three UAB teaching hospitals: University Hospital, Cooper Green Hospital, and Birmingham VA Medical Center. Participating students will work within assigned teams comprised of an attending physician, a senior internal medicine resident, 1-2 interns, and other personnel including pharmacists, caseworkers, and social workers. Students will be exposed to adult patients with a variety of disease processes. Objective components emphasized during the clerkship will include but not limited to: medical history taking, physical examination skills, case presentation, differential diagnosis of disease processes, and the development of a strong foundation of internal medicine knowledge.
