Prerequisites * * * WRITTEN APPROVAL REQUIRED * * * Must be a Third Year Medical Student and have completed at least one clerkship course prior to this course. Completion of Internal Medicine or Pediatrics Clerkship is strongly recommended but not required.

Course Description Students will be exposed to all areas of medical genetics, including general genetics (the evaluation of children and adults for possible genetic syndromes or genetically determined disorders); biochemical genetics (evaluation, diagnosis, and management), cancer genetics clinic (risk-assessment, testing, and counseling); and prenatal genetics (evaluation, testing, and counseling of at-risk pregnancies). There are also several specialty clinics, including Neurofibromatosis, Craniofacial, Cleft, Marfan syndrome, and skeletal disorders. The student will also be involved in the consult service, which covers UAB and Children's Hospitals. The student can also spend time in the clinical laboratories. Lastly, there are many lectures and seminars, including a weekly Clinic Conference, that provide excellent learning opportunities.

Requirements Meet with Dr. Robin at 8:30 on the first Monday of the elective for orientation. (Must have completed at least one clerkship prior to this course.)
Meet with Dr. Robin once per week to discuss cases.
See at least 15 patients, including at least 2 from cancer clinic, prenatal clinic, general genetics, and consultation.
Present 2 cases at clinic conference.
Evaluation Students will be evaluated based on the reviews of the faculty. This is based on several factors, including the demonstration of an increasing understanding and fund of knowledge through case discussions with Dr. Robin and other faculty; and professionalism.
