Course Description The purpose of this course is to acquaint the student with a basic knowledge of ophthalmology, especially as it applies to the general practice of medicine. The student will observe and participate in the examination and treatment of patients in the Outpatient Clinic and the Emergency Room and will also have the opportunity of observing ophthalmic surgery in our operating rooms. The student will receive instruction and practical application in the use of the direct ophthalmoscope and the slit-lamp corneal microscope and in tonometry. On completion of the rotation the student should be proficient in conducting a basic ophthalmologic examination. The student will be expected to attend all lectures and specialty rounds occurring during the rotation. Hours of required attendance are 8:00 am to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The student will report to the Chief Resident and/or the Medical Director of the clinic each morning in the Lions Eye Clinic, on the second floor of the Eye Foundation Hospital, 1720 University Boulevard. At the close of the rotation, the student will be evaluated in writing by the Course Director.
