Course Description In this rotation the fourth year medical student will assume the role of intern, under the close supervision of a faculty member and a second or third year medicine resident. This rotation is designed to better prepare the student for the responsibilities of residency, as well as build upon the knowledge and skills already learned as a third year student. History taking , physical examination skills , diagnostic and therapeutic management of patients with a wide variety of medical disease will be emphasized. The student will be on call every fourth night with his/her team. Daily teaching rounds will occur with teams consisting of one faculty member, one second/third year resident, one intern, and one AI. There are several conferences available through the Department of Medicine for further education. Students are encouraged to attend these conferences during the month. Students are expected to assume the patient care responsibilities of an intern. This includes admission work up, history and physicals, daily orders , progress notes and discharge summaries. Students are also expected to see all patients on a daily basis prior to rounds and as needed, depending on the severity of their illness. Students will be evaluated on their clinical performance, participation, and professionalism. Students are expected to be on service the entire block, including weekends. Any scheduled absences must be prearranged with the Chief Medical Residents prior to beginning the rotation. Days off during the month will be scheduled by the resident on service. Orientation will be held on the first day of every rotation @ 07:30 in BDB 334 with the Chief Medical Residents. * Enrollment above the maximum limit is possible with prior approval of the Chief Medical Residents.
