Course Description Activities: The Senior Medical Student Preventive Medicine rotation will provide the student an introduction to 6 main topic areas that are highlighted by the American Board of Preventive Medicine and represent strengths within the Division of Preventive Medicine: 1. Health disparities and Special Populations 2. Quality of Care 3. Health care delivery systems 4. Measurement and Statistical Analysis 5. Clinical preventive services 6. Behavioral and Social Health (including Addiction and Mental health) Specific activities for the elective month have four components, and success of the course requires an important component of self-directed learning by the student. 1. Participation in Research and Learning activities of the Division of Preventive Medicine and the Center for Outcomes and Effectiveness Research and Education. 2. Clinical/Program Observation: Community and clinical activities will permit the student to participate in clinical shadowing of preventive medicine faculty in clinical situations with the objective of highlighting major social and health systems elements that affect the provision of care. Additional activities, when available, will include community outreach/health activities (e.g. assisting with health fairs, and community education or outreach.) The particular opportunities available each month will vary with available faculty. 3. Directed Reading: A curriculum of major articles and chapters related to the 6 core course areas will be provided 4. Analytic literature review: Students will be expected to conduct a directed review of a topic falling under one of the 6 listed headings, to be negotiated with the course director.
