Course Description Traumatic injuries place significant demands upon our health care resources and dollars. Patients suffering traumatic injuries, either blunt trauma such as a motor vehicle collision or penetrating trauma such as a gunshot wound, require immediate, sophisticated, and expensive medical services. Prompt evaluation and appropriate care, including radiological services, can not only reduce mortality but also morbidity. This reduction in morbidity and possible subsequent disability can help reduce health care costs. Similarly, the timely and appropriate evaluation of the non-traumatized patient can reduce morbidity and mortality. For example, stroke, pulmonary embolism, and intra-abdominal infection are all conditions that lend themselves to radiological evaluation leading to prompt diagnosis and treatment. The student will receive exposure to the common presentations of patients to the Emergency Department and to their radiological evaluation. This understanding will benefit not only those students interested in Radiology as a career, but also those entering Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Neurology, General Surgery, and Orthopedic Surgery.
