Course Description
Persons 65 years of age and older constitute about 13% of the U.S. population. However, they consume a large portion of our health care budget. The US Census Bureau has projected that by the year 2030, the proportion of persons 65 years of age and over would be 20% of the population. Persons 85 years of age and over are the fastest growing segment of our population. No matter which discipline of medicine you practice in, your patients will very likely include many older adults. Understanding the unique and often complex issues associated with caring for older adults will enhance your ability to make a significant difference in the lives of these patients. By attending the course, you will learn the basic skills of managing common medical problems in older adults in the setting of multiple other medical problems, polypharmacy and functional decline. You will have the opportunity to evaluate older patients on your own, under the direct supervision of UAB geriatricians. A wide variety of experiences will be provided including geriatric primary care, specialty clinics in falls and incontinence, and a visit to a continuing care retirement community. We hope you will take this opportunity to learn about the healthcare of older adults.
