Course Description
Goals of Course: Goals are as follows: 1) For students to get in touch with their own spirituality and to become sensitive to patient and their family's spiritual needs; 2) To learn to take a spiritual history as well as a medical history; 3) To become familiar with the medical literature regarding the effects of faith on health and healing; 4) To develop a working personal definition of spirituality and what gives meaning to life. This course if offered two-three times a year. Example lectures include but are not limited to: Introduction to Spirituality and Medicine, Addiction Recovery, Spirituality and Patient Care, Spirituality at the End of Life, and introductions to the Baha'i Faith, Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Jehovah's Witness, and Atheism. The course includes lecturers from many faiths and backgrounds from inside and outside of UAB. Because of this, the schedule varies based on lecturer availability. The lectures will be on Monday - Friday between 8am and 5pm. The course is via zoom and the grades are based on attendance, participation and discussion. Sessions will be recorded but attendance is encouraged for engagement and questions. Feedback is required via a survey due the following Monday. If a session is missed due to an unavoidable conflict, students are asked to watch a recorded session if available and to notify the course director and/or assistant so that we may offer as consistent a course offering as possible.
