Course Description The goal of this course is a holistic approach to the care of the terminally ill and their families focusing on the patient's physical and psychosocial well-being, the family, continuity of care, and the quality of life. The student learning objectives for this course is that the medical student should exhibit awareness and sensitivity to the terminally ill patient/family as regards: * one's own attitudes and experiences about death and dying and the impact of those attitudes on how we care for terminally ill patients * the process of "breaking the bad news" * psychosocial issues and family dynamics * spiritual issues * cultural issues and customs in the context of death and dying * the dying patient's need for pain relief, control, and dignity

Requirements Required activities:
*orientation and readings *hospice agency experience-hospice team role, -identify appropriate patients for hospice care, -pain syndromes and control, -patient/family home visits
Required reading: selections from Death and Grieving: Empower the Resident, Family, and Faculty, Hospice Program materials, select one from the appropriate journals including American Journal of Hospice & Pall ative Care
Evaluation Project (choose one):
1. To describe the impact of the health care system on the physical and mental health of a terminally ill patient
2. To write an essay that focuses on one aspect of a termially ill patient's life (access to and utilization of health care: quality of life; psychosocial)
3. To lead a one-hour seminar for students and faculty about a terminally ill patient that provides an understanding of that patient's life
4.Pass / Fail. Will be graded by the individual teaching the course
