Course Description
The pediatric clerkship is an eight-week course which exposes students to all facets of pediatrics. The course is divided into three segments: inpatient, outpatient, and a combination pediatric specialty/Pediatric ER segment. The student will spend three weeks on a multidisciplinary pediatric inpatient team, evaluating and caring for children with acute and chronic illnesses. The student will spend three weeks in the UAB Huntsville pediatric outpatient clinic, learning the concepts of healthcare maintenance and family centered care. The student will become familiar with common illnesses, normal growth and development and learn about the variations in immunology, biochemistry, pathology and physiology that occur as the child ages. Three days are spent in the newborn nursery. The newborn nursery is run by the HH Pediatric Hospitalists and the student will work under the guidance of the FP intern and hospitalist group attendings. The remaining time will be spent at different pediatric specialty practices (Neurology and Hem/Onc at the Huntsville St. Jude's Outreach Clinic), and in the Pediatric ER. Each student is assigned two weekend shifts in the Pediatric ER to work one-on-one with a Pediatric ER attending. Emphasis during this clerkship is placed on self-directed learning with daily interactive and didactic teaching.
