Course Description
This is an 8 week clinical clerkship designed to introduce the student to the core principles of Pediatric Medicine. The student will spend four weeks on a multidisciplinary pediatric inpatient team evaluating and caring for children with acute and chronic illnesses. Students will spend one week caring for newborns in the newborn nursery, one week on a service which deals with chronic illnesses of pediatrics, one-half week on the adolescent medicine service dealing with transition form childhood to adulthood, and one and one-half weeks in a general pediatric practice learning concepts of health care maintenance in children. The student will become familiar with the common illnesses of pediatrics, the common causes of death in childhood, normal growth and development of children, the concepts of family centered care and the variation in the immunology, biochemistry, pathology and physiology that occur as the child ages.

Requirements
Attend all clinics, rounds, and didactic seminars. Be available for patient evaluations at all times during the day. Work up and care for at least two children each presenting with fever, respiratory illness, GI complaints, and other acute pediatric problems, five newborns, three adolescent patients, and two children with chronic illnesses, two well child checks, and complete ten computer based pediatric cases along with 75% of problems on the ED sheet. In-house call will be every fourth night.
