Course Description
Camp MASH (Make Arthritis Stop Hurting) is a summer camp for kids ages 6-18 with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) or other multisystem autoimmune disease (systemic lupus erythematosus, juvenile dermatomyositis, etc.). Prior to the camp, students will complete the course reading requirement and attend a brief orientation to the Special Topic organized by the course director, which will be held before the end of the spring semester. UASOM students will join the campers in classic outdoor activities like swimming and archery, but will also learn the basics of autoimmune disease management and gain experience in teaching children about chronic disease medication adherence and treatment modalities. UASOM students will have the opportunity to work closely with pediatric rheumatologists and the medical team in managing chronic disease care in childhood. Food and lodging will be provided for the week with no charge to the student. Students can provide their own transportation or work with the course director to coordinate transportation. Students will also be required to attend a wrap-up/reflection session once classes begin in the fall.
