Course Description
This course is an introduction to addiction medicine and substance use disorders (SUD). The course will teach and train medical students to treat persons with SUD. These students will enter residencies across the United States, bringing their medical school knowledge, skills, and training. The key focus of this course is to provide standardized, evidence-based, anti-stigma education to medical students to reduce and prevent stigma against treating persons with SUDs. The course will include 20 hours of virtual MI CARES modules, an online learning module system specifically designed for SUD education. When students complete 20 hours of virtual modules, they will become eligible for Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) licensure, which is required for prescribing controlled substances. The 20 hours of virtual modules fulfill the required 8 hours of opioid or substance use disorder training needed to obtain a DEA license once full medical licensure is obtained. In addition, if students are willing to be exposed to patient care, the course could include a live, virtual shadowing session with a psychiatry resident or psychiatry attending in the context of addiction medicine, so students can experience first-hand the concepts they are engaging with. The course will include a mandatory virtual course introduction on Monday, 9-10am CST and conclude with a mandatory virtual Friday session at 1-2pm CST. The rest of the course will be asynchronous, and students will be responsible for submitting all course documents by midnight on Sunday following the course.
Where To Report
This course is held virtually
Requirements
In order to receive course credit, students must attend the virtual Monday introduction session (9am CST), the virtual Friday afternoon conclusion session (1pm CST), complete 20 hours of MI CARES modules, and share certificates of completion. If students cannot attend either of the virtual sessions, they should reach out to course leadership for guidance. Missing both sessions will result in loss of course credit.
Evaluation
Students will be responsible for uploading their MI CARES certificates to UAB BOX, where the course team can verify they have completed their 20 hours of modules.
