Course Description In an increasingly interconnected and global society, threats posed by emerging infectious diseases, outbreaks, and potential pandemics, are ever-present. Using practical epidemiologic principles and the lessons learned from the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic, among others, this course serves to provide an overview of outbreak investigation, response, and prevention. Students will review basic microbiologic and epidemiologic concepts through a series of self- directed learning and group didactics. These concepts will then be used to provide a basic framework for outbreak investigation and highlight the tools used by investigators to formulate coordinated responses and prevent future outbreaks from occurring . The class will deconstruct modern and historical outbreaks, in addition to those portrayed in popular media and literature. Students will then apply these concepts in practice using various immersive cases and simulations. This will culminate in a group project, in which the class will have the opportunity to conduct an outbreak investigation and prepare a response plan in a real-world setting.
