Course Description This special topics course provides medical students with the unique opportunity to engage directly with patients in the UAB emergency department (ED) to assess their social determinants of health using the Protocol for Responding to and Assessing Patients' Assets, Risks, and Experiences (PRAPARE) social screener. Over 1-2 weeks, students will gain hands-on experience in identifying and addressing social factors that impact health outcomes. The course emphasizes the importance of social determinants in patient care, enhances communication skills, and fosters a holistic understanding of patient health.

Requirements Students will be required to
1. Complete any assigned readings on SDOH and the PRAPARE screening tool
2. Complete training regarding PRAPARE screening in ED
3. Obtain UAB EMR access prior to course start date in order to enter PRAPARE screening information into the patient chart
4. Complete 20 hours (per week of special topics credit) of ED SDOH screening
Evaluation -Active participation in screening activities with completion of at least 20 hours of screening time
-Quality and accuracy of data collection with timely submission of screening data
-Contribution to interdisciplinary team discussions
-Submission of final reflective feedback detailing personal experiences, lessons learned, and suggestions for improving SDOH screening in the ED
