Course Description A 2-week or 4-week experience in forensic pathology at an Alabama Department of Forensic Science (ADFS) Regional Laboratory which performs medicolegal death investigation in Montgomery, AL. The student works with and is supervised by an ADFS board-certified forensic pathologist/medical examiner. The experience includes observing a medicolegal autopsy. This elective is also designed for those pursuing Family Medicine or other primary care residency and practice in a rural, underserved area who may want to serve as a coroner, deputy coroner, or assist the coroner in medicolegal death investigations. Students will be provided with a stipend to cover travel and housing.

Requirements Students will be required to shadow a board-certified forensic pathologist/medical examiner over the course of a week. Students will read and discuss with the preceptor how reasons for death including causes, manners and mechanisms of death are determined and stated. Students must participate in a forensic autopsy.
Evaluation The Course Director will talk with the ADFS Board Certified Forensic Pathologist to ensure the student was an active participant and that they did attend and participate in at least one forensic autopsy. Student must have demonstrated to the satisfaction of the preceptor how to determine and explain causes, manners, and mechanisms of death.
Notes Students are expected to be actively involved at the assigned ADFS facility from 8 am – 5 pm Monday – Friday. During this time students will be exposed to forensic pathology and medicolegal death investigation. Students will participate in at least one forensic autopsy, and will learn how to identify and discuss causes, manners, and mechanisms of death.
