Course Description
This course will be integrated into summer educational offerings for students enrolled in the Comprehensive Urban Underserved and Rural Experience program (CU2RE). Content will focus on effective communication strategies and evidence-based lifestyle medicine practices to support patients in maintaining healthy diet and exercise habits. Course activities will include both online, asynchronous and in-person components, such as online modules, facilitated discussions, experiential learning, and brief writing assignments.

Requirements
1. Review all asynchronous assignments including pre- and post- assessments.
2. Participate in all group discussions.
3. Participate in Motivational Interviewing workshop/role play.
4. Apply Ml/ health coaching strategies to at least 2 clinic encounters.
Evaluation
• Knowledge checks via Canvas
• Application and reflection activity: Students will apply course content to clinical encounters (Thurs and Fri) to practice steps of Ml and facilitate health behavior change. In addition, they will submit a reflection on their experiences with emphasis on reflective listening, gauging readiness for change, managing resistance, and individualized goal-setting.
Notes
Monday: 12pm - 5pm Telehealth assignment and facilitated discussion with Drs. Delaney, Cohen, Marsh
Tuesday: 9am -12pm Nutrition in Underserved Populations lecture and active learning session with Caroline Cohen
Wednesday: 9am -12pm Motivational Interviewing module completion and facilitated discussion with Michael Wiederman and Caroline Cohen
Thursday and Friday: 4-5 hours of clinical experience each day - to apply concepts in patient encounters
