Course Description
This course is intended for MS3/MS4 students who have completed the MS3 surgery clerkship and are interested in pursuing a career in surgery. Overarching goals of this course include: developing routines that will aid in success during acting internships/surgery intern year; fostering mentorship between women students, faculty, and/or residents; furthering technical skills in the operating room, providing a safe environment to discuss student concerns regarding gender bias and intersectionality. Daily schedules are personalized for each student and will depend on the assigned service. Students will be paired with a maximum of 2 surgical faculty members and pairings will be based on student's submitted preferences for specialty/subspecialty exposure (general surgery, otolaryngology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, ophthalmology, urology). Students will participate in a minimum of 1-2 clinic days - potential exception is if a student prefers to spend the week on 1 service and the assigned attending only has clinic once during that week. Students will be excused from clinical duties and required to attend grand rounds, chair education conference, afternoon course discussion groups, and education/training sessions.
