Course Description This course is designed to give students exposure to the subspeciality of Primary Care Sports Medicine and the career of a Sports Medicine Physician. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, Sports Medicine is one of the fastest growing specialties in the last decade and this rotation will provide students with hands-on experience in the care of athletes from a multidisciplinary approach including primary care, non-operative orthopedics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, nutrition sciences, and athletic training perspectives. Medical students will be introduced to the multitude of injuries and medical conditions encountered by the athletic population. They will gain an understanding of the demands of being a team physician, caring for athletes of all ages, identifying sports-related injuries, and leading a multidisciplinary Sports Medicine team.

Requirements Students will be expected to attend and participate in clinical rotations, lectures, journal clubs, and athletic event coverage throughout the rotation. In Person lectures will be held on Friday afternoons. Online lectures/journal clubs and Exercise Medicine modules may be accessed at any time. Athletic event coverage and clinical rotations will be arranged at the beginning of the rotation. Every student will be required to attend the introduction to Sports & Exercise Medicine Elective Zoom meeting on the first day of their scheduled rotation.

During each week of the rotation each student will be required to attend/complete: Four (4) half day clinic sessions with UAB Sports & Exercise Medicine faculty, One (1) evening UAB Sports & Exercise Medicine athletic event coverage, One (1) AMSSM online lecture, and Two (2) online Exercise Medicine & Physical Activity Promotion modules.
