Course Description
This elective will allow medical students who are interested in rural practice the opportunity to explore various models of primary care and rural health needs around the state of Alabama along with gaining insight to the impact of the social and cultural influences that exist. This will include visits to multiple towns and practices during the 2 or 4 week elective to meet with physicians and other communities members/stakeholders. The goal is to increase the student's understanding of the physician's role as a clinical and a community member and leader requiring a broad range of skills which are necessary to serve within rural communities. With prior arrangement, students may choose to focus on a particular community or area in Alabama.
