Grades are based on:
- Class attendance: Three 2-hour classes and 2 online modules will be assigned to students.
- Field work: Eight practice sessions conducting health screening (body measurements and lab duties) under supervision, performing motivational interviewing, and conducting patient education.
- Direct observation assessment of health education and communication skills, using a standardized feedback form.
Evaluation Students will work under the supervision of a physician preceptor to perform basic biometric testing (BMI, blood glucose, blood pressure) and then provide individualized health counseling to patients who visit the health screening. Students are likely to interact with between 5 and 20 patients at each screening event. Activities will be scaffolded to allow students more independence as they demonstrate proficiency with tasks. Students will be observed and receive formal feedback several times over the course and evaluate their abilities in using the communications tools and clinical approach with the patients.
