Course Description This is a course will introduce medical students to the challenges and skills necessary in basic medical issues and skills needed for treatment of medical problems in wilderness and austere settings. Goals are for each student to be come proficient in basic medical skills to diagnosie, triage, and treat these common problems in low resource, wilderness setting. It will include teaching on basic wilderness survival skills. It will take place at both local state parks and in classroom settings and be taught by UAB and adjunct faculty using didactic style teaching, hands on skills practice, and simulation.

Requirements Daily attendance and participation in morning sessions and hands on skills . Afternoon attendance on some days is optional. Camping is optional.
Additional expenses based on optional afternoon activities (water, hiking, spelunking activities)
Evaluation Direct observation and evaluation of afternoon skills / procedure workshops and simulations with satisfactory student performance. Group discussion and participation.
