Course Description This course begins with a discussion of the pathophysiology of addiction and the pharmacology of medications for opioid use disorder (OUD) and then focuses on topics that physicians encounter when treating patients with this disorder. These include impact of stigma and shame, health care mistrust, motivational interviewing, nonpharmacologic interventions and difficulties finding affordable treatment programs. Learning Objectives: 1. Discuss the pharmacology of opiods and drugs used in opiod medication-assisted therapy. 2. Describe motivational interviewing used in the treatment of OUD. 3. Discuss the impact of stigma and shame on healthcare delivery. 4. Compare and contrast three of the more common peer-support organizations. 5. Examine available resources for addiction care and funding sources in Alabama. 5. Describe harm reduction strategies and non-pharmacologic approaches to addiction care
