Course Description
The goal of this clinical course is to provide exposure to the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery. This will include evaluation and treatment of maxillofacial trauma, facial reconstruction, facial esthetics, craniofacial surgery, temporomandibular joint surgery, and oral surgery. Clinical experience will involve both inpatient and outpatient management. Written appraisal will be given by the faculty as to basic knowledge, skill, and ability to relate to individuals. Students will round with a faculty members on a regular basis and their activities are directly supervised in the operating room. Learning Objective: 1) Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of basic oral and maxillofacial surgery problems. 2) Understand the indications for and the limitations of diagnostic studies to evaluate patients with oral and maxillofacial surgical problems. 3) Become familiar with oral and maxillofacial surgical treatments and alternatives to surgical treatment. 4) Become familiar with the outcomes and complications of common oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures. 5) Become familiar with common medications used in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
