Course Description
The course guides students on their path to residency by developing their understanding of elements needed for a strategic, comprehensive residency application. Metacognitive learning strategies will be used to facilitate students' preparation for USMLE Step 2 CK. Current feedback from UAB residency program directors and other career advising resource will be used to help students adopt the perspective of a residency program director in preparing their residency application. Learning Objectives: 1) Apply metacognitive learning strategies to Identify areas of strength and weakness in clinical knowledge; 2) Choose appropriate resources to support CK preparation; 3) Evaluate specialties and programs within a specialty; 4) Recognize program director perspective of residency application; 5) Formulate an application strategy; and 6) Craft individual elements of a successful residency application.

Requirements
1) Create a Step 2; 2) CK preparation plan that describes schedule, resources and self-identified areas of weakness; 3) Research specialties and assess competitiveness utilizing web-based and internal tools; 4) Participate in online workshops and recorded tutorials on developing application components; 5) Create or revise personal statement, CV, and MSPE information sheet; and 6) Complete selected online interview preparation curriculum
Evaluation
Pass/Fail.
Students will submit:
- Step 2 CK study plan that includes schedule, resources and areas of focus
- Individual components of residency application, (CV, Personal Statement, and MSPE Information sheet)
- Worksheet detailing data pertaining to specialty of interest, application strategy
- Self-assessment of video interview performance

Students should plan for:
1/2 day didactics, interactive workshops - In-Person Mon,Tues. Zoom Wed-Friday
1/2 day project based learning
Monday: metacognitive learning strategies; perspective taking in crafting residency application.
Self-directed: draft of CV & Personal statement.
Tuesday: residency data resources; interactive CV & personal statement workshop
Self-directed: CV & personal statement assignment; residency data project.
Wednesday: residency director and career advisor perspective; MSPE overview.
Self-directed: MSPE assignment; Step 2 learning plan.
Thursday: guide to the Big Interview; Big Interview practice & peer interviews.
Self-directed CV and personal statement preparation.
Friday: interactive PS/CV Sorting: Determining Applicants to Interview; Step 2 CK learning plan; draft CV & personal statement due; interactive feedback.
