Course Description
This course will introduce and familiarize the student with care of the surgically critically ill patient. The majority of the patient interactions will take place in the Trauma Surgical Intensive Care Unit and the Emergency Department at DCH under the supervision of DCH Trauma Service. Appropriate triage, diagnosis and management of multiple acute and chronic conditions will be reviewed. Students will be exposed and learn about procedures which may include: endotracheal intubation, mechanical ventilation, placement and management of arterial lines and central venous lines, chest tubes, urinary catheters, paracentesis, diagnostic ultrasound. There is emphasis on respiratory assistance, respiratory mechanics and physiology, and acute support systems and their management. As an AI, call and weekend coverage will be expected. Objectives include the Acute Care AI objectives and may include others at the discretion of the course director. Appropriate EPAs will be assessed.
