Course Description
This course was designed in order to support women students considering a career in surgery in the setting of an improving though still present gender gap in the field. Overarching goals of this course include: fostering mentorship relationships between students, faculty, and/or residents; providing a safe environment to discuss student concerns regarding gender bias and intersectionality; and training to recognize and take appropriate steps if confronted with these, in order to empower and instill confidence in students. Daily schedule throughout the week will depend on assigned service. Students will be paired with a maximum of 2 surgical faculty members and pairings will be determined based on student's submitted preferences for specialty/subspecialty exposure. We intend to reach out to faculty in all surgical specialties - general surgery, otolaryngology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, ophthalmology, urology. Students will participate in a minimum of 2 clinic days - potential exception is if a student prefers to spend the week on 1 service and their assigned attending only has clinic once during that week. Students will be excused from clinical duties and required to attend grand rounds, chair education conference, and afternoon course discussion groups / education and training sessions.
Where To Report
8:00 am in BDB (conference room # to be determined)
