Course Description SCD affects approximately I00,000 Americans. SCD occurs among about 1 out of every 365 Black or African-American births. SCD occurs among about 1 out of every 16,300 Hispanic-American births. About 1 in 13 Black or African-American babies is born with sickle cell trait (SCT). Patients with sickle cell disease experience acute pain events and chronic end-organ damage. It is important that providers understand the acute and chronic management strategies for patients with sickle cell including opioid management and FDA approved medications to ameliorate disease. Students will have the opportunity to participate in both inpatient and outpatient management. For interested students, we can explore opportunities to shadow in our sickle cell murine labs. Learning Objectives: Learning Objectives: The student will participate in outpatient management of sickle cell disease. They will learn how to manage hydroxyurea and chronic transfusion as well as other novel FDA-approved sickle cell medications. The student will participate in inpatient management of sickle cell disease. The student will learn how to prescribe opioids as an on-demand therapy and by patient-controlled analgesia. lf interested, the student will learn about how the sickle cell murine model is being used to improve our understanding of human disease. The student will learn principles of clinical research and how sickle cell management has been improved by landmark clinical trials.

Requirements Daily participation in inpatient/outpatient care.
Evaluation Pass/fail based on attending physician feedback.
Notes Students will spend weeks either in inpatient or outpatient rounds. Lectures will be provided by Pediatric Hematology.
