Course Description
The elective orthopaedic course will be an additional one month rotation for home students in orthopaedic surgery. Given limitations with students having "away" orthopaedic rotations, it is important to allow for students to have more hands on training and formal didactic training in orthopaedic surgery. Learning Objective: The objectives for this special topics course include an extension of formal training in orthopaedic surgery. Course objectives for the medical student include understanding of musculoskeletal pathology including operative and nonoperative indications. In addition to identifying pathology, the student will be able to have a firm understanding of radiographic review of orthopaedic pathology. The medical student will participate in the operating room with direct patient care and will also assist with postoperative care of orthopaedic patients. The rotation will be set up to have three distinct tracts including various subspecialties of orthopaedic surgery including trauma, hand, foot and ankle, arthroplasty, spine, sports, and pediatrics. The medical student will also be asked to participate with didactic sessions and will be required to give a case based talk relevant to orthopaedic care. Finally, the student will take call with the primary orthopaedic trauma team in an effort to provide exposure to the acute care of orthopaedic injuries. The General schedule of planned activities: The schedule will be dependent on the track the the student is assigned to but typically involved work hours within current work hour restrictions. Work hours will be typically 0600 to 1600 on most rotations. The students will also be asked to take weekend call at least one weekend while on rotation. Hours will be restricted according to UAB workhour restrictions.
Where To Report
OSI Building, 2nd floor conference room at 0700.
Requirements
This elective course is meant to complement the standard MS-4 orthopaedic rotation.
Evaluation
Pass/Fail. The student will be assessed based on participation in the OR and in clinic. Residents and staff will be asked to fill out evaluations based on participation, preparation and also question based evaluations throughout their one month rotation. The students will also be graded on lectures that they will give during their rotation. These will be submitted to the medical education office for an elective grade. These grades will be verified by either the program director or the assistant program director.
