Prerequisites Successful completion of the core internal medicine, peds and surgery clerkships and any clerkship which covers the content material of the requested elective or acting internship course (e.g. Pediatric Clerkship must be successfully completed prior to taking a Pediatric Elective or AI).

Course Description This one month (4 week) experience will take place in the UAB newborn nursery and is available to 4th year students. Students will learn to diagnose and manage a variety of medical issues (e.g., hyperbilirubinemia, suspected sepsis, minor congenital malformations, hypoglycemia, drug-exposed infants, ..). Under the supervision of a general pediatrician and an intern, students will function as acting interns, taking primary responsibility for a panel of patients. They will learn how to do circumcisions and will participate in other newborn procedures. They will refine their newborn physical examination skills and gain experience counseling parents about common issues and problems such as breast-feeding and other nutritional issues, immunizations, infant safety, and newborn care. This may also be taken as a 4 week elective.
