Course Description
This is a hands-on rotation which the student will have an active role in patient care. Students will be assigned to a physician for the block and is expected to work with him/her for as many of the required shifts as schedule allows. The student will evaluate the patient, then present the H&), assessment and plan to the physician. The student is expected to take ownership of patients, follow-up on all work-ups, and determine the patient's response to therapy. By the end of the rotation the student should have been exposed to a wide variety of patient encounters and will be able to perform a variety of procedures, including sutures, catheters, NG tubes, LPs, ultrasounds, IVs, ABG sampling, and advanced airway. This course is appropriate for students interested in a career in EM but also those interested in FM, IM, peds, or surgery, as well as other specialties. Learning Objectives: 1) Develop basic skills and knowledge of the fundamentals of managing the acutely ill/injured patients; 2) gain experience in performing a brief and focused history and physical exam; 3) participate in medical and trauma resuscitations and; 4) be exposed to/perform a variety of emergency procedures.

Requirements
Students will work approximately 13 shifts per 4 week block. A mixture of day, evening, night and week-end shifts are required. Attend all lectures in the Emergency Medicine Lecture Series at The University Medical Center (generally on Thursdays at lunch).
Evaluation
Pass/Fail. Students will log, on paper, five of each types of encounters: 1) high acuity medical; 2) low acuity medical; 3) surgical; and 4) trauma. At the end of each shift, students will be required to give attending physician an evaluation form to be completed and turned in to course coordinator.
