Course Description
This course is designed for the UAB Huntsville Integrated Internal Medicine Residency Program. The student will get a broad experience in critical care medicine and pulmonology to include, but not limited to: initial assessment of patients requiring ICU admissions, ventilator and airway management, management of unstable patients, and on-going care of patients in the ICU. Bedside and didactic teaching will be used. Learning Objectives: Use medical l knowledge and clinical reasoning to form hypotheses related to patient problems in the intensive care unit and/or emergency setting. 2) Obtain an accurate and pertinent medical history from all appropriate available sources and record it in a complete, concise, and effective manner. 3) Perform, record, and verbally describe a comprehensive physical examination and review the physical findings with a resident or a faculty member. 4) Use the clinical laboratory, imaging studies, and other diagnostic testing in an appropriate and cost-effective manner and discuss the methods and limitations of commonly performed diagnostic tests. 5) Create accurate problem lists for assigned critically ill patient s. 6) Apply critical reading skills in using the library and electronic resources to research the disease states encountered. 7) Deliver concise, clear, and comprehensive oral presentations at the bedside, during formal rounding and during required conference presentations. 8) Recognize and employ basic understanding of acute respiratory failure in the management of patients requiring ventilator support. 9) Perform basic care of critically ill patients under resident or faculty supervision. Examples include but are not limited to fluid and medication management, hemodynamic assessment and management, and treatment and prevention of infection. 10) Demonstrate sensitivity to the psychosocial, educational, economic, cultural and religious backgrounds of patient s that underlie their diverse belief systems. 11) Apply ethical principles of patient care in the management of individual patients, including end of life issues and gain understanding on how these may affect disease processes. 12) Perform essential technical tasks and procedures in the critical care or emergency setting under resident or faculty supervision. Examples include but are not limited to arterial puncture, placement of an indwelling intravenous catheter, and endotracheal intubation.

Requirements
The student will be expected to participate in all activities as directed by the attending physician(s) to whom they are assigned to work.
Evaluation
Pass/Fail. The student will be assessed by the attending physician using goals and objectives for the acting internship.
