Course Description This course is designed to integrate participatory experiences in clinical and rural community settings across the State of Alabama, allowing students to perform a community health assessment and community based health related service through a community health project. Students will be supervised by Tuscaloosa-based faculty and rural community family physician preceptor. Monthly learning sessions in a seminar format will be provided either through distance learning or in person. Students presentations will be either in Tuscaloosa or at rural sites. Learning Objectives: Assess needs, asses and capacity for health promotion in a rural community (county) using existing information and data related to health, by engaging stakeholders in the process, identifying community resources, and examining factors and relationships that influence health. 2. Demonstrate understanding of the basic concepts of cultural competency, such as cultural humility, sensitivity, and respect. 3. Discuss the critical role of family physicians within any health care system and their role in the community and in public policy. 4. Develop evidence-based health promotion/disease prevention plans for their designated community.

Requirements Students will be required to 1) conduct a community health assessment and present results in written and oral form; 2) participate in monthly seminars; and 3) conduct a community-based project and present results in written and oral form.
Evaluation Pass/Fail. Seminar attendance, oral and written presentation of a community health assessment, submission of community interview list with completed visits, completing a community health project, oral and written presentation of community health project. There will be monthly seminars conducted either in person in Tuscaloosa or through online connection where faculty will present community medicine and public health topic for discussion.
