Course Description The purpose of this rotation is to expose all, but primarily non-ophthalmology bound medical students to foundational elements of this specialty. At the conclusion of this course, students will understand basic ophthalmology clinical and how it overlaps with their future practice, as well as a basic understanding of the recognition of ophthalmologic conditions and emergencies. Students will also participate in the "Real Practice" lecture series, receiving instruction on core components of contemporary private practice. Learning Objectives: 1) Recognize the basic anatomy, physiology, optics and refractive states of the eye. 2) Review and show ophthalmologic clinical skills including attaining a through ocular history and performing a thorough clinical examination (visual fields, motility, and pupillary exams). 3) Practice performing an ophthalmoscopic (retinal), slit lamp and tonometry examinations. 4) Review and discuss basic eye pathology, ophthalmic diseases, ophthalmologic pharmacology and treatment modalities for ophthalmologic disease via didactics and patient encounters including: (a) etiology, underlying pathophysiology, and prompt clinical recognition of ophthalmologic emergencies and their initial management, (b) ocular manifestations of systemic illness rheumatologic, infectious, etc.), and (c) indications for ophthalmic surgery. 5) Review critical components of starting, working in and managing a private practice through participation in the "Real Practice" lecture series one half day per week. This series of lectures will provide direct contact with a broad spectrum of professional that compose a medical practice and foster discussion of key private practice concerns (medical practice management, preparation for employment and contract negotiation, coding and compliance, billing and collections, compensation, malpractice, entrepreneurship in medicine, etc.).

Requirements Students will rotate through various areas of Eye Center South including cataract, refractive, glaucoma, retina, pediatric, ocular plastics and cornea. Students will spend 2-3 days in at least 4 of these areas during their rotation. Students are expected to attend interactive "Real Practice" lecture series.
Evaluation Pass/Fail based on direct observation, patient interactions, attendance, responsiveness to feedback, etc.
Notes Eye Center South is pleased to provide housing during the entirety of your rotation with us. The housing will be based on availability at either a local hotel or an Airbnb in proximity to your rotation site.
