Course Description
The pediatric neurosurgery team of Children's of Alabama is one of the largest and busiest pediatric neurosurgical services in North America. Medical students enrolled in this special topics course will have the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the operative treatment of structural abnormalities of the brain, spine, and peripheral nervous system. This course is ideal for students considering a career in pediatrics, neurology or surgery. Course format: 1.) Clinical activities: a., morning report, b., inpatient rounds, c. surgical cases; 2.) Didactic activities - a. case-based discussion/assignment. Learning Objectives: 1.) Observe techniques used in the neurosurgery operating room; 2.) learn about the field of pediatric neurosurgery; and 3.) acquire an introductory understanding of the management of acute and chronic pediatric patients.
